The Uganda National Women senior football team has been registered by FUFA for the 2018 Total Women Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Ghana. The latest development is good news for women football in Uganda after FUFA took a decision in 2014 to re-organise women football in the country so as to create a pool of players to form various national teams for future international engagements. The news was confirmed by the FUFA Communications Manager Ahmed Hussein.
‘We believe the stage is set for our women football players to play against the best on the continent. The Crested Cranes have been entered into the 2018 Total Women Africa Cup of Nations. Full details of the qualification process will be confirmed by CAF’ said Hussein. The FUFA Women Elite League that started three years ago will provide the bulk of players to feature in the National team. ‘We are glad that the Women Elite League and other football competitions organized and sanctioned by FUFA will be the basis of selecting players for the National team’ added Hussein.
He added; ‘We also have young, skillful and talented players playing abroad but all these will be considered as per technical demands of the team’ The 13th edition of the Africa Women cup of Nations is a biennial international football championship organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the women’s national teams of Africa. The tournament will be held in Ghana from 17 November to 1 December 2018. Ghana qualified automatically as hosts, while the remaining 7 slots will be determined by the qualifying rounds, which will begin in February 2018. The tournament also doubles as the African qualifiers to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France with the top three teams from Africa qualifying. USA is the defending Champion of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
